The steps
- 01
Check the age rules
Most general AI assistants set a minimum age in their terms, often 13 or older with parental consent for teens. Use the family or teen options where they exist.
- 02
Turn on the protections
Use parental controls for app access and screen time, turn off data sharing and model training where the app allows it, and keep devices in shared spaces for younger kids.
- 03
Agree the house rules
Keep them short: never share your full name, school, address or photos; AI can be wrong, so check facts; ask a parent before using a new AI app; tell us if anything feels weird.
- 04
Show them it can be wrong
Ask an assistant together about something your child knows well, like their favorite game or book, and spot the mistakes. It's the most memorable lesson you can give.

- Be alert to AI companion or chat-character apps. They're designed for engagement, not learning.
