The steps
- 01
Pick a safe word
Choose a word or phrase that isn't on social media and that everyone, including grandparents, can remember. Anyone calling in an "emergency" asking for money must say it.

Agree the callback rule
If anyone calls or messages asking for money or passwords, hang up and call them back on the number you already have. Real emergencies survive a two-minute callback.

Know the warning signs
Urgency, secrecy ("don't tell Mom"), unusual payment methods like gift cards, crypto or wire transfers, and a voice that sounds right but a story that doesn't.

Tell the people most often targeted
Grandparents and teenagers are common targets. Walk them through the safe word and callback rule in person.
